Grounded and Grateful: Finding Your Comfort Zone

Dear Friends,

My sister’s house feels like a mug of hot chocolate and a cozy comforter in front of a warm fire (even without an actual fireplace!). It has always been my safe place, my happy place, my I-never-want-to-leave place, whether she was living in an apartment or house, and whether it was in England, Las Vegas, or her current small town in New Jersey.

I don’t have to try to relax, it happens immediately. I don’t have to think of things to talk about, we have plenty of rich conversations in between our beloved silences. I don’t have to figure out what I want to do, because I’m thrilled to just be. My responding to texts and scrolling diminishes. We watch movies together that bring back memories and create new ones. And I read those books I’ve had stacked on the table for a year, because that’s what you do when you’re snuggled up surrounded by hundreds of books that have actually been read and appreciated.

It was difficult coming back, having to function, and getting back into work mode, because it had felt so good to simply be; to be with the person who knows me better than anyone else and loves me because of—and in spite of—the way I navigate the world. There is no safer, more nurturing, more validating feeling than that.

I’m trying to figure out how I can bring my sister’s unique touch to my home. Although I get to enjoy alone time, it often brings guilt with it; the thought that I should be getting things done. I don’t feel that with my fabulous sister, Ellen. Maybe I’ll visualize her being with me and I’ll read more often; maybe I’ll pretend we’re talking and leave my phone alone for hours at a time; and maybe I’ll watch a movie like Gypsy, the original Ocean’s 11, or The Wax Museum (still scary!) and journal my memories of when we saw that together as kids. Will it be like being with her? No, of course not. Will it be like a warm hug I’m intentionally giving myself? I hope so.

I know that no matter what exterior changes I make, it won’t be the same because my sister brings her impossible-to-replicate magic to her nest. With some creative visualization and focused intention, let’s see if I can experience a bit of The Ellen Element…it’s worth a try!

Who creates your safe, happy, never-want-to-leave place? Have you found that yet? If not, don’t stop looking! In the meantime, are you willing to join me and see if you can be that for yourself? If so, please reach out to me and share your plan. Together, we’ll design our own cozy go-to-whenever-you-want-to spaces!

With gratitude,

Amy

What is the difference between The Soul Series and my other classes? The speaking courses—Beyond the Expected and Beyond the Podium—are focused on the process of improving your presentation skills to make you a calm, confident and compelling speaker. Those courses are designed to help you understand the BODY of an effective presentation (i.e., the skeletal structure of a great speech, how to flesh out ideas, the shape and sound of your delivery, etc.). They give you a solid foundation with the techniques you’ll need to make an impact every time you speak.

The Soul Series series takes a deeper dive into the SOUL of the creative and emotional effort that defines our lives. While this course will still be grounded in a sense of practicality, the main focus will be to help participants develop the interior depth and richness necessary for showing up fully in any area of life. Whether as a stand-alone course or in conjunction with (or as a follow up to) the speaking classes, you will find The Soul Series impactful and meaningful.

Magic is waiting for you inside this program and in one year you will be glad you made the commitment!
