Authenticity Over Achievement: Finding Your Favorite Self

Dear Friends,

I saw a quote months ago that stuck with me. It read, “Be the favorite version of yourself, not the best version.” I remember exhaling as I let the words sink in.

Striving to be the "best version" of myself often feels like an exhausting competition—it implies I’m never enough, I need to constantly improve,  I’m lacking in some way. I’ve signed up for countless seminars, devoured every self-help book I could find, and listed endless areas of my life I need to fix. I’m always chasing after being smarter, wealthier, thinner, etc., as if these define my worth.

In contrast, the idea of being my "favorite version" feels light and joyful. It’s about embracing positivity, love, and support. When I close my eyes and visualize this version of myself, I see someone who is present, savoring each moment without dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. I imagine sharing genuine laughter with friends (at no one else’s expense!), speaking and acting thoughtfully, and practicing gratitude throughout my daily routine—not just when I make my little gratitude list.

Here’s what I discovered: when I embody my favorite self, I naturally uncover my best self. All those “shoulds” (that are often disguised as goals, like smarter, wealthier, thinner) and societal pressures fade away. They either fall into place or lose their significance when I focus on being my favorite version.

What about you? Let’s explore the difference between the best version of you and the favorite version of you. Have some fun with this! Reflect on whether your current behaviors are guiding you toward or away from your favorite self. What if you let go of rigid expectations and embrace the joy of simply being that version of you that makes life feel like it’s flowing? Consider taking one small action that nurtures your favorite version. For me, that might be calling someone who always brings a smile to my face or sending a supportive text to a friend. What small step can you take today?

Remember, the favorite version of you might just turn out to be the gentle, compassionate, and loving expression of your best self. Let’s see where this journey leads.

With gratitude,

Amy

Take a deep breath. Now imagine yourself with a small group of creative souls feeling what you’re feeling. This time it’s going to be different. No excuses. You’re in the right place, at the right time, with the right people. And you’re leaving with the speech (or book or blog) you’ve had in your subconscious for a long time.

Out of your head, out of your heart, on paper and on the way to those who need and want to hear it. Finally. We will brainstorm, we’ll listen, we’ll write. We’ll laugh, we’ll cry (I hope because I love the catharsis of it), we’ll bond, and we’ll write. You'll be surrounded. inspired and nourished by the group's loving support.
